This article is applicable to the in-browser client, the universal desktop client and the classic Windows desktop client. For information about version control in the extension for Visual Studio, see Use version control in Visual Studio.

To help you identify pending changes and conflicts, the in-browser client, the universal desktop client and the classic Windows desktop client show version control icons in the Project Navigator. When you commit changes to version control or revert them, the icons disappear from the Project Navigator.

To help you identify the type of change that you want to commit or revert, the in-browser client, the universal desktop client and the classic Windows desktop client show the version control icons in the Version Control dialog and in the commit and revert confirmation pop-up windows.

In the classic Windows desktop client, you can click the icons in the Project Navigator to toggle a drop-down menu with limited options for version control.

R Renamed Renamed Indicates that the item has been renamed.
M Modified Modified Indicates that the item has been modified. On the app node, indicates that the structure or the app properties have been modified. On file and folder nodes, indicates that the contents have been modified.
+ Added Added Indicates that the file has been added to the app.
- Removed Removed Indicates that the file has been deleted from the app.
Does not appear in the Project Navigator.
! Conflicts Conflicts Indicates that the local version of the file is in conflict with the version in the remote Git repository.
