The Universal Desktop Client

The universal desktop client is still in Beta. Do not hesitate to report any issues you might encounter using it to the Telerik support team.

The universal desktop client is a lightweight Electron-based IDE, available for Windows and macOS. It combines the speed, performance and availability of the in-browser client with the deployment and on-device testing capabilities of the classic Windows desktop client.

Layout of the Universal Desktop Client

  1. The universal desktop client shows important notifications and the name associated with your login credentials. You can reach the documentation, leave feedback and view your login information.
  2. From the top menu bar, you can add content to the app, save, access version control, build, simulate and publish your app.
  3. In the code editor, you can open and modify JavaScript, TypeScript, LESS, CSS, HTML, XML, JAVA and Objective-C files. The universal desktop client applies syntax highlighting to open files. To help you identify where a JavaScript code block starts or ends, the universal desktop client highlights the opening and closing braces for the block. To highlight a code block, position the caret before or after the closing or opening brace.

  4. For HTML files, you can open the code editor in code, designer or split view. For more information about the Kendo UI Designer, see Developing the User Interface. From the built-in UI designer tool, you can quickly design the user interface for your Kendo UI-based mobile apps.
  5. From the Project Navigator, you can access the app assets.
  6. You can access system settings for the universal desktop client from the cogwheel icon.
  7. From the Output pane you can review or clear the log for your current universal desktop client session.
From the Devices tab, you can view currently connected devices and inspect their logs and details.
  8. In the top right corner, you can see your currently active branch. Clicking it opens the Version Control dialog.

Limitations of the Universal Desktop Client

The universal desktop client provides almost the complete set of features of the classic Windows desktop client with the following limitations.

  • You cannot LiveSync changes over cable—both to application packages and the developer apps.
  • You cannot work with Windows Phone devices over cable. You need to build and deploy on Windows Phone devices via QR code.
  • You cannot debug on device (over cable).
  • You cannot debug in the device simulator on Windows systems.
  • You cannot test contacts, file storage and network connection in the device simulator.
  • The universal desktop client auto-updates automatically but does not notify you of updates.
