Inviting Users to Your AppManager Account

You can invite users to access the apps you distribute in Progress AppManager by sending out an email invitation. The invitation contains information about completing the user's registration. Once the invitee completes their registration, you will be able to see them listed in the Users page in the App Distribution Portal. This article will guide you through the steps that you need to perform to invite a new user in AppManager and manage user invitations:

If you want to distribute apps without making your users register and authenticate with AppManager, you can consider using public app distribution.

Prerequisites

If you still do not have any apps published in AppManager, go through this article: Publish Your First App.

To distribute apps to your users, you also need to have at least one distribution group in the App Distribution Portal.

Procedure

Inviting Users by Typing in Their Email Addresses

Follow the steps listed below to invite one or more users to your AppManager account by manually typing in their email addresses:

  1. Click Users in the side navigation under App Distribution. App Distribution Portal takes you to the Users page.
  2. Click Invite User.
  3. Type in the email address of the person you want invite.
  4. (Optional) Click Add another email to input more than one email addresses.
  5. Add the new users to one or more of the listed distribution groups.

    If a user does not belong to distribution groups, no apps will be available to them.

    If you do not have distribution groups added to App Distribution Portal, read this article: Adding Distribution Groups.

  6. (Optional) Select Send additional email to collect UDIDs from users.

    If you do, the invited user(s) will receive an email after registration asking them to tap a button inside the content from every iOS device they have. This action will register their device in AppManager. Using this approach, you can get device UDIDs without asking users to install the AppManager mobile app.

  7. Click Send Invitation to navigate to the Users page and view your invitations after they are sent, or Send and Invite Another User to stay on the same page and invite more users.

The invited users will receive emails with registration links. Once they complete their registration, they will be able to see all apps that you have assigned to their distribution group and that are compatible with the device they log in from.

Importing Users from a CSV File Containing Email Addresses

When you want to invite many users to the same distribution group, you can easily do this by importing their emails from a CSV file. To do this:

  1. Click Users in the side navigation. App Distribution Portal takes you to the Users page.
  2. Click Import Users. This brings up a popup with an upload, where you need to select a CSV file, containing a column with user email addresses.

    To ensure that AppManager will parse the addresses correctly, follow these guidelines:

    • Provide a valid CSV file. If you are not sure about this, run your file through CSV Lint and address all errors and warnings that occur.
    • Ensure that the first line of data (excluding headers) contains an email address in at least one column. Each column, that you want to be parsed as an email column, should contain an email value in its top data cell. Subsequent lines may or may not contain emails.

    The easiest way to get a file for import, if you do not have one already, is to open a spreadsheet application like Microsoft Excel, paste the email addresses in one column and save the file in CSV format.

    Once AppManager parses the CSV file, it displays a list of all recognized email columns.

  3. If there is more than one email column, choose the one you want to use by checking the box in its header.

  4. Select rows of emails to invite.
  5. Add the new users to one or more of the listed distribution groups.
  6. (Optional) Select Send additional email to collect UDIDs from users.

    If you do, the invited user(s) will receive an email after registration asking them to tap a button inside the content from every iOS device they have. This action will register their device in AppManager. Using this approach, you can get device UDIDs without asking users to install the AppManager mobile app.

  7. Click Import Selected Users.

AppManager checks the selected email addresses and omits any invalid ones before sending out the invitation emails. Afterwards, you are taken to the Users page where you can check the status of the invited users. Once users complete their registration, they will be able to see all apps that you have assigned to their distribution group and that are compatible with the device they log in from.
