Publishing Windows Phone Apps

After you add an app to App Distribution Portal, you need to publish it to make it visible to the members of its distribution groups. This article describes the process of publishing a Windows Phone app through AppManager.

Prerequisites

To publish an app, you need to have already added it in the App Distribution Portal and added all necessary information and files to it. If you still have not added an app, go through this article: Adding a New App.

Distribution of Windows Phone apps outside of the Windows Store requires two things:

Before you publish your app, you need to have a Windows Phone Private Enterprise Certificate and use it to re-sign the app.

Publishing Windows Phone Apps in AppManager

To publish a Windows Phone app:

  1. In the Apps screen, click the app version that you want to publish.

AppManager shows the App Details page where you can review the app and check its distribution groups.

  2. Click Re-sign to sign the app.

Windows Phone apps are usually unsigned during development and installing an unsigned app on a Windows Phone device is not possible. If you already signed your app during build, you can skip this and the next step.

  3. Upload your certificate .P12 or .PFX file, type in the password and click Re-sign app.
  4. Click Publish when the app is correctly signed.
  5. Check Send push notifications if you want to allow AppManager to send push notifications to all registered devices in the groups, assigned to the published app.

AppManager will send push notifications only to devices that support the app's minimum OS version.

  6. Check Distribute app by email? if you want to send an email with a link to the app to all eligible users.

In case you want to send out distribution emails later, do not check this option. You can later select the app in the Apps screen and click Resend Email to distribute the app to your users.

  7. Click Publish.

Application Enrollment Token

An Application Enrollment Token (AET) can be generated from every Windows Phone Enterprise Certificate. All users need to install this token on their devices before they can install the distributed app. AppManager handles this for you by automatically generating an AET when you re-sign the AppManager Mobile App for Windows Phone from the Windows Phone Settings page in the App Distribution Portal. Once you re-sign the AppManager mobile app for Windows Phone, the AET will be also available for download on the app details pages in the email and web catalog distributions.

It is recommended to code signing the AppManager Mobile App for Windows Phone even if you are going to use the email distribution only. This way you will ensure that an Application Enrollment Token is generated.
