Open Files for Editing

Select the Progress AppBuilder client you are currently using for development.

IDE

To be able to use the advanced code analysis, autocompletion, typing assistance, code cleaning, refactoring and code folding features that AppBuilder provides, you need to open your files for editing in the code editor.

You can open multiple files. Each file opens in an individual tab in the navigation toolbar.

AppBuilder applies syntax highlighting to open files.

Prerequisites

  • Verify that your preferred AppBuilder client is running and you are logged in.
  • Verify that you have opened the code for your app in AppBuilder.

Procedure

In-Browser

You can choose between the following approaches to opening a file.

  • In the Project Navigator, find the file that you want to open and double-click it.
  • In the Project Navigator, find the file that you want to open, right-click it and select Open.
  • In the Project Navigator, select the file that you want to open and press Enter.
  • If you know the name of the file that you want to open, go to the file.
    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+G (on Windows systems) or Cmd+Alt+G (on macOS systems).
    2. Type the file name.
      The in-browser client dynamically lists suggestions that match your search criteria as you type.
    3. Press Enter or click a suggested file in the pop-up menu.
  • Open the file in an additional vertical pane in the code editor.
    1. Open a file.
    2. Right-click the tab for the open file.
    3. Select Split Vertically.
    4. Repeat Steps 2—3 to open additional panes.

When the code editor is split into multiple panes, the in-browser client opens additional files in the currently active pane.

Universal

You can choose between the following approaches to opening a file.

  • In the Project Navigator, navigate to the file that you want to open and double-click it.
  • In the Project Navigator, navigate to the file that you want to open, right-click it and select Open.
  • In the Project Navigator, select the file that you want to open and press Enter.
  • If you know the name of the file that you want to open, go to the file.
    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+G (on Windows systems) or Cmd+Alt+G (on macOS systems).
    2. Type the file name.
      The universal desktop client dynamically lists suggestions that match your search criteria as you type.
    3. Press Enter or click a suggested file in the pop-up menu.

Windows

You can choose between the following approaches to opening a file.

  • In the Project Navigator, navigate to the file that you want to open and double-click it.
  • In the Project Navigator, navigate to the file that you want to open, right-click it and select Open.
  • In the Project Navigator, navigate to the file that you want to open and press Enter.
  • If you know the name of the file that you want to open, go to the file.
    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+G.
    2. Type the file name.
      The classic Windows desktop client dynamically lists suggestions that match your search criteria as you type.
    3. Press Enter or click a suggested file in the pop-up menu.

Visual Studio

To perform this operation, apply your preferred Microsoft Visual Studio approach.

CLI

To perform this operation, apply the approach or tool available for your current IDE.
